Today, we stand in remembrance of the great men who bravely gave their lives for the freedoms and rights we are enjoying. This National Heroes Day has become a celebration of conviction, justice, and freedom pertaining to really gutsy acts and enormous sacrifices for the nation. These were not just historical persons but an incarnation of a spirit that inspires us yet today. Whether fighting in battles, standing up against tyranny, or other labored efforts that remained behind the scenes, they were very instrumental in shaping our nation.
Their sacrifices were not in vain; they laid the foundation on which the democratic and free society that we enjoy stands today. Inherent in the actions and choices of every hero was taking the commitment to the greater good beyond their single lives. We remember them with deep gratitude and respect today, aware of the debt we owe their legacy.
National Heroes Day speaks even more about the role of speaking out and standing up for what is right. It is during a time of great fear and uncertainty, when so many others may have remained silent, that it is our heroes who chose to use their voices in the struggle for justice and freedom. They knew that to be a patriot didn't mean just to love one's country; patriotism meant to labor over its betterment at almost any cost. Their lives speak eloquently to the effect that individual acts of courage and integrity indeed do make a difference in making history. We renew our commitment to these values as we celebrate the lives of people who played their part in changing society, for the building of a more just and equal society is work that can never really be finished.
